Omatseye, spoke on the same theme: “The legal & Ethical perspective
of the media coverage of the 2015 elections.” The Pace News reports.
Omatseye started his speech by appreciating the institution for considering him worthy to speak at this formal occassion,
“I was formerly a teacher and i know how it is to train students. Over a decade ago as a journalist in United States, I was able to blend with people of different backgrounds and it is essential we know how to live with one another.”
The guest lecturer
said, ethics and law work together, journalist are the ones to decide
what is right for the society and to be the watchdog.
On the 2015 elections,
the media was a pot hole to the people and politicians, they were so
many issues on ground then ranging from the use of Permanent Voters Card
and Card reader, to how much power the electoral have, another that
played out was if General Muhammed Buhari was qualified to run with the
so called certificate issue. You see one of the ethical and legal
perspective of the media includes conflict of interest. Laws and ethics
have lost its individual finance, not all the media are innocent that
some of them are part of the people bastardizing there role models as
journalist.
He went further to
talk about the lesson learnt from the just concluded election and part
of the things he mentioned is that the media cannot all be bought and
the people can transform the media.
He concluded his
speech by saying, it is time for all to work for the betterment of the
country. The veteran journalist took his time to answer question on the
state and federal government influence on the media, he agreed to
publish a monograph, He advised young journalist to be truthful to
themselves and that journals had ethical rules.
In an interview with Adams Opeyemi, 100 Level student of the institution, said “Am grateful for this opportunity and have learnt so much from the lecture and I promise to make use of what I learnt from the lecture”.
