Omatseye Lectures LASUSOC Students

The First ever faculty lecture in the history of Lagos State University, School of Communication. The lecture which was organized by the faculty, and it took place at the lecture hall I of School of Communication with the theme: “The legal & Ethical perspectives in the media coverage of the 2015 presidential elections.”




The guest lecturer and the Chairman, Editorial Board of The Nation Newspaper, Mr. Sam Omatseye, spoke on the same theme: “The legal & Ethical perspective of the media coverage of the 2015 elections.” The Pace News reports.
Omatseye started his speech by appreciating the institution for considering him worthy to speak at this formal occassion,
“I was formerly a teacher and i know how it is to train students. Over a decade ago as a journalist in United States, I was able to blend with people of different backgrounds and it is essential we know how to live with one another.”
The guest lecturer said, ethics and law work together, journalist are the ones to decide what is right for the society and to be the watchdog.
On the 2015 elections, the media was a pot hole to the people and politicians, they were so many issues on ground then ranging from the use of Permanent Voters Card and Card reader, to how much power the electoral have, another that played out was if General Muhammed Buhari was qualified to run with the so called certificate issue. You see one of the ethical and legal perspective of the media includes conflict of interest. Laws and ethics have lost its individual finance, not all the media are innocent that some of them are part of the people bastardizing there role models as journalist.
He went further to talk about the lesson learnt from the just concluded election and part of the things he mentioned is that the media cannot all be bought and the people can transform the media.
He concluded his speech by saying, it is time for all to work for the betterment of the country. The veteran journalist took his time to answer question on the state and federal government influence on the media, he agreed to publish a monograph, He advised young journalist to be truthful to themselves and that journals had ethical rules.
In an interview with Adams Opeyemi, 100 Level student of the institution, said “Am grateful for this opportunity and have learnt so much from the lecture and I promise to make use of what I learnt from the lecture”.
Lagos State University students were so happy when they felt the presence of the journalist, poet, playwright and novelist. Some had the opportunity of seeing the Chairman Editorial Board of The Nation and a four time winner of the Nigeria Merit-Media Award for the first time and the faculty appreciated Mr. sam Omatseye by presenting him a gift.
