Qatar Will Not Host World Cup - FIFA Official

by Sulaimon Shakirudeen Adetunji

The 2022 World Cup will not be held in Qatar because of the scorching temperatures in the Middle East country, FIFA Executive Committee member Theo Zwanziger said

"I personally think that in the end the 2022 World Cup will not take place in Qatar," the German told Sport Bild

"Medics say that they cannot accept responsibility with a World Cup taking place under these conditions," the former German football (DFB) chief, who is now a member of the world soccer's governing body FIFA that awarded the tournament to Qatar in 2010.

Although wealthy Qatar has insisted that a summer World Cup is viable thanks to cooling technologies it is developing for stadiums, training areas and fan zones, there is still widespread concern over the health of the players and visiting supporters.

"They may be able to cool the stadiums but a World Cup does not take place only there," Zwanziger said.

"Fans from around the world will be coming and traveling in this heat and the first life-threatening case will trigger an investigation by a state prosecutor.

"That is not something that FIFA Exco members want to answer for."

FIFA officials, contacted by Reuters, said Zwanziger was not giving the view of the all powerful Executive Committee.

"He is expressing a personal opinion and he explicitly says so," FIFA spokeswoman Delia Fischer said. "We will not comment on a personal opinion."

FIFA President Sepp Blatter said in May that awarding the World Cup to Qatar was a 'mistake' and the tournament would probably have to be held in the European winter.

"Of course, it was a mistake. You know, one comes across a lot of mistakes in life," he told Swiss television station RTS in an interview at the time.

"The Qatar technical report indicated clearly that it is too hot in summer, but the executive committee with quite a big majority decided all the same that the tournament would be in Qatar," he added.

FIFA is now looking to shift the tournament to a European winter date to avoid the scorching summer where temperatures routinely rise over 40 Celsius.

Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa chaired a meeting to discuss the matter earlier this month with the options of January/February 2022 and November/December 2022 offered as alternatives to June/July.

However, talk of a potential change away from the usual dates has resulted in plenty of opposition from domestic leagues around the world, worried the schedule switch would severely disrupt them.

Both FIFA and Qatar World Cup organizers have also been fending off questions of corruption ever since they were awarded the tournament back in 2010, while Qatar has also been criticized for the conditions provided for
migrant workers' in the tiny Gulf state.

by Ogungbo Shamsideen

A female trader identified as Madam Pere was battered by the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Oko-Oba Police Station, Mr. Akintade Williams, on Tuesday night at Olayinwola road Abule-Egba.
According to the woman, after the workday she was going home when suddenly the DPO who was on patrol of the area ordered her to come to him.

And as soon as she approached him, the policemen just pounced on her as if they were having problems before.

Then he tore her clothes, punched her in the face, destroyed victim's cell phone and took all the sales proceeds she was bringing home.

Later on Madam Pere has reported the attack to the State Commissioner of Police, Umaru Manko and referred to Ikeja General Hospital for treatment.

The incident caused widespread outrage.

An anonymous resident of Abule-Egba said the attitude of Williams since he took the post of the DPO of Oko-Oba is troublesome and unacceptable.

And the way the DPO behaves does not correspond to his position.

Residents expressed outrage as they do not understand how a DPO could beat up a harmless trader for no reason.

When contacted the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer of the state Police Command, Mr. Damasus Ozoani to speak on the matter, he directed the reporter to the PPRO, Mrs. Ngozi C Braide.
She could not be reached at the time of filing this report.

It was gathered that last year Williams battered a police corporal attached to his house for going out to eat on a Sunday.

* DSS to quiz Alimodu Sheriff over Boko Haram sponsorship allegation

The Department of State Security, DSS, says it will be inviting former Borno state governor, Alimodu Sheriff, for questioning following recent allegations leveled against him by Australian. hostage negotiator, Stephen Davis, who said he's a Boko Haram sponsor.

Speaking at a news conference today in Abuja, spokesperson for DSS, Marilyn Ogar, said the former governor had in the past been invited to the DSS office for questioning over Boko Haram activities and they will be inviting him again. Ogar also dismissed insinuations that former Army chief, Lt. Gen Azubuike Ihejirika is a Boko Haram sponsor, describing it as untrue, uncharitable & wicked. Find the statement after the cut.

"I would want to say here that it is absolutely uncharitable for us as Nigerians to reward somebody who laid down his life in pursuing this same people (Boko Haram) for us to accept that he can in any way be associated with or seen sponsoring the same sect he together with this service succeeded in pulling down their activities in Kano, Okene and other parts of Nigeria to a halt and pushing them to Sambisa forest. Its the same man we want, because he is no longer in office, to say he is the one sponsoring the sect. I think its being wicked. That shouldn't be the way we reward people who lay down their lives to provide a secure environment for us. As for the former Governor, he has been invited twice by this service and the service has also invited him again" she said

Moral Decency Among Youths

by Oshikoya Olawale

The high level of moral decadence among the Nigerian youth is one issue that needs to be checked urgently before t is too late. In time past, African (Nigeria) youths were known to be of good moral and conduct.

There was respect for not only parents and elders among the youth, but also for constituted authorities. The respect was such that parents could decide for their child who to marry irrespective of the child’s opinion, though this practice had its own effect but the child was obliged to obey.

It was a common practice for youth who were courting each other to wait till the night of their wedding before having mutual knowledge of one another (sex). It was regarded as a thing of pride when a lady marries as a virgin. It brought the lady and her family great honor, while shame and
dishonor were accorded to ladies who did not marry as virgins. Premarital sex was not only seen as a sin but was also considered a taboo in our society.

However, all the good morals and conduct attributed to the Nigerian youth seems to have been lost or replaced by foreign ones. Recently the PM News reported the case a 300 level student Redeemers University who killed his father after an argument ensued between them and this not the first time that such incident will be reported by the media.

It is no longer uncommon to see youths and even teenagers give birth outside wedlock. Abortion as become the order of the day. Some youth have referred to lack of sex before marriage as lack of opportunity and not ability to control one self. All of this decadence can be traced to cultural imperialism which has been propagated by the media.

The Nigerian broadcast media carries 70 percent of western content and just about 30 percent of local content and with the aid of other mass medium such as the internet, films, music videos and novels the need to be of good conduct and be morally upright seems to have lost its value among our youth. A very large number of the media audience in Nigeria is made up of the youth and this explains the high level of decadence amongst them.

In the light of all these, we advise that the Nigerian Broadcasting commission (NBC) take the needed steps to ensure that the ratio of foreign content in the broadcast media is properly controlled; punishment for stations that exceed the ratio of foreign content allowed should be clearly stated and adequately carried out.

ODD: Man Bites Dog Repeatedly

by Arowolo Timothy

A U.K. man by name Luke Shearer repeatedly bit a Staffordshire Bull terrier on the face after it attacked his own Dog named Sky and wouldn’t let it go.

26-year-old Luke Shearer from Coventry and his 59-year-old father were happily walking Luke’s beloved three-year-old Husky, named Sky, to his grandma’s house one fine morning when, out of nowhere an out of control Bull
Terrier, steamed straight into an unsuspecting Sky and went straight for his neck.

Once it had Sky’s neck firmly between its jaws, the Staffie refused to let go, Luke reacted by biting the dog in its face repeatedly until the Dog let go.

When asked why he did that he said

“It happened so quickly. We were walking to cut my grandma’s hedge so luckily we had some shears with us. The dog came and jumped at Sky’s neck, and it was life or death for my dog, so I just reacted and hit it with what I had. My dad was hitting it with his walking stick but that didn’t work, so I stabbed it four or five times in the spinal column, but it kept coming. I jumped on it and started biting its face until it let go.”

The UK authorities have decided not to prosecute him, because it was deemed as self defense.

Police are still trying to trace the owner of the rouge dog, but thankfully Sky will make a full recovery

Finding The Social Media Balance

by Awosanya Ayomide

Remove the web and all its content from the world of today and our continent may be in commotion. That is how well pure reliance on virtual space has become. Information and the speed at which it comes is the currency of the moment and nations that matter have a top on happenings in cyber space, using it for predictions and, where possible to increase the country's cross domestic product. Online transaction fast becoming the trend.

Social media being an important aspect in the web, starts out as something you check occasionally, but before long, it takes over your life. You stop reading books or sitting with yourself quietly. Instead, you check facebook. Then check it again, and again.

But there's hope. And you don't have to quit social media; the trick is finding balance. This balance include;

Quarantine your smart phone, first and foremost, remove your smartphones from the bedroom. Stop using it as an alarm clock, reading device or music played next to your bed. The temptation to wake up and check your email, or respond to someone on Facebook or blackberry messenger is too great. And once you have fallen into the trap, it is game over.

Resistance is not futile; take away the itch to check your accounts. Oscar Wilde once said , "I can resist everything except temptation." You can block sites on your computers and mobile phones. If that sound relevant to your online habits, you need to download some free software that will make it simple to block website.

Start a new routine; If you are like me, you didn't join facebook and instagram and start using it 24 hours a day.

To get back to a more appropriate amount of time, set up a new routine that doesn't involve your phone or laptop or tablet.

Read a book for 30 minutes in the morning before logging on, or spend the last hour without technology (or do both).

Finally, whatever you do, don't go and announce your plans to slow your use of social media on social media ( the  temptation to see what followers are saying may be to great).

How We All Want To Be Like Every Achiever

by Ogundimu Omolabake Saidat

In our world today, all youth wants to be like one successful person or another. Yet all they do is laze around doing nothing but say I want to be like M.K.O Abiola, Wole Soyinka, Femi Otedola and the likes of this people. Do you know what it takes to be like this people? Or what it takes to be where they were or are today? If you do not, please sit back and read about a global achiever born and breed of our soils.A great playwright and poet was brought to this world on July 13, 1934. His name is oluwole Soyinka, Soyinka was born into a Yoruba family, a descendant of a Remo family in Abeokuta, ogun state in Nigeria, a time of British dominion.

After his primary schooling in st peters primary school in Abeokuta, he went to Abeokuta grammar school where he won several awards for his literary composition .however during studies at the university college in Ibadan which was affiliated with the university of London, he began has first ever work with a radio play for Nigerian broadcasting service.

Still while at the university, Soyinka and six others founded the pirates confraternity, an anti corruption and justice seeking organization. After this fraternity, Soyinka moved around and made great impact with is writing. On his becoming chief cathedral of drama at the university, he becomes more politically active. He was however imprisoned for 22 months and still he still wrote a significant body of poems and notes criticizing the government.

At 80 years of age, Soyinka is still a force to reckon with, which promoted Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, rivers State Governor to describe hi m as a global achiever at a dinner held in his honour at a banquet ball of the government house.

Explaining that Soyinka’s achievements spanned the globe and that Soyinka was however only able to attain such feat as a result of hard work and persistence. Governor Amaechi said “you have in the midst of our so many bad news brought Nigeria honour, this is because even the football that we were very good in those days is no more ,the country is in disarray. But you have remained consistent in the literary world. Reading begets writing and you must understand what you are writing about “He said Nigeria needs the experience and wealth of knowledge of literary icon to get out of troubled waters.

Wole Soyinka persistence and hard work led him this far with education from not just school, his parent and the society and himself accepting this knowledge and using them. For him to be where he is today, he read ,wrote ,became politically active, he was brutalized in prison for 22 years and his other many attributes included justice, fair play ,dignity for human society and faith in good governance which by far excluded any form of tribalism and plagiarism.

Do you want to lose your parent, family, friend or any body part, do you want to be beaten and imprisoned for years perhaps, if yes then you can wish to be like every rich, successful and popular person on earth. If No, never wish onto yourself what other has gone through rather pray for such hard work, knowledge, persistence and consistence and be your own person and give to your country what it takes to swim out of their troubled water heads up?

Motorcycle Riders Protest On The Street

by Ajose Olawale Adegboyga

Commercial tricycle operators in Bayelsa State, popularly known as Keke Napep, yesterday protested against the alleged excessive use of force and extortion by policemen on the roads following the hitting of a pregnant woman by a policeman along Azikoro Road, Ekeki in Yenagoa.

The policeman, said to be an Inspector, was said to have hit the pregnant woman while trying to hit a Keke Napep driver with his gunbutt for refusing to part with a N50 bribe.

One of the protesting Keke Napep drivers described as unbecoming the activities of policemen at check points in the state capital.

He said: “This is a small state but the amount paid as bribe to policemen is exorbitant and fearful. Can you imagine we pay as much as N600 daily?

“It is wrong and criminal. Most of our passengers are embarrassed by these policemen at night. They extort us and some of the passengers. They call everyone criminal. This is wrong.”

Contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Alex Akhigbe, said he was not aware of the incident.

CBN Reintroduced ATM of N65

By Abiola Serah Funmi

Do you think it will have negative impact on the cashless policy and economic growth in general?.

The bank have spent a lot of resources in deploying ATM infrastructure and they. Have responsibility to recover their cost. Before the banking consolidation. We had probably less than one hundred ATM in Nigeria was in 2004. Today in every nook and cranny, you see ATMs deployed and they are still not sufficient.

If you go outside Lagos, you see queues for ATMs, they (the banks) need to be able to recover part of this cost so that there can be an incentive for them to continue to deploy them. The removal of the charges initially affected the bank performance when you talk about banks profit, nobody looks at the capital employed or human resources deployed, nobody thinks about the infrastructure they are using to generate these billions.

But the truth of it that this arrangement is excess for people who are withdrawing,it's marginal fee in terms of payment, you must have done three withdrawal but applies to you,so, it will also help those who withdraw money not to do so in frivolous manner and plan their cash flow I believe that banks must encouraged to continue to deploy ATMs. I don't think we have sufficient really after Lagos, where you have a lot of queues, the incentive for them to deploy more must never be lost. And so, there should be some compensation for that services.

Former Titans Kicker Bironas Kiled In Car Crash

by Omotosho Adeola

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Rob Bironas, who worked his way through odd jobs and the Arena Football League before becoming one of the NFL's most accurate kickers, died in a car crash. He was 36.
The former Tennessee Titans player died Saturday night when he lost control on a curve in his 2009 GMC Yukon Denali and crashed after 11 p.m. less than a mile from home.
Report  said his SUV was speeding when it went off the road and hit a line of trees before coming to a stop upside down in a culvert.
Bironas was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead with out any evidence of alcohol or drugs at the scene.
The Titans released Bironas in March after nine seasons. The Tennessean reported that Bironas worked out for the Detroit Lions and for Tampa Bay during the off season.
The Titans, who play at Cincinnati, extended condolences Sunday.
The team said in a statement "Rob made a significant impact as a player in his nine years with the team and more importantly touched many lives in the Nashville community off the field,".
Bironas was the fourth most-accurate kicker in NFL history, connecting on 85.7 percent of his kicks (239 of 279). Only David Akers made more field goals (247) between 2005 and 2013 than Bironas. For kickers with 100 or more field goals since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, Bironas ranked third making 75.2 percent of his kicks from 40 yards or longer (94 of 125).
He finished as the Titans' second all-time leading scorer with 1,032 points, and he set a franchise record scoring triple digits in seven straight seasons. He also set an NFL record in 2011 in hitting a field goal from at least 40 yards in 10 consecutive games.
Bironas made a franchise-record 11 game-winning field goals during his career, including a 60-yarder against the Indianapolis Colts in 2006 that remains the longest field goal in Oilers or Titans history. Bironas kicked an NFL single-game record eight field goals in a 2007 victory over the Houston Texans, including a 29-yard game-winner as time expired. That helped him make his only Pro Bowl, the same year he was an Associated Press All-Pro.
He went to Auburn and transferred to Georgia Southern, where he won a Division I-AA national title. Bironas went to work for his father's company in Louisville, Kentucky, and was cut by Green Bay in 2002. He played in the Arena Football League and even the AF2 while spending time in training camps with Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh working as a part-time security guard and other jobs while trying to stick with an NFL team.

Daniel not from Ogun, says Amosu

by Oladapo Oreoluwa

The political rivalry between Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun and his predecessor, Gbenga Daniel, took a new dimension yesterday, as Amosun queried Daniel’s lineage.

Amosun said he knew how Daniel was helped to claim Sagamu as his home town, when he aspired to contest in 2003.

The governor, who spoke in Odeda, Odeda Local Government Area while on an assessment tour, vowed before All Progressives Congress (APC) members to expose the ‘intrigues’ surrounding the ex – governor.

Amosun’s comments followed allegations by Daniel last week that the present administration has sold off all the farmlands in the area.

Daniel said: “When I came into power in 2003, the first place we visited was Odeda and we established 13 farm settlements.

“Today, we are sorry that this present administration has started selling our farmlands to other neighbouring states.

“He is busy building roads and bridges which we did when we came in 2003. When I was coming today, I tried to check on the road, the road was very bad.

“ I want to ask you people of Odeda, what has Amosun done for you here? He has been building bridges all over and nothing was done here for you, he neglected you.”

But the governor said his predecessor frittered away all the state’s wealth under spurious concession.

He cited Apoje farm settlement which was sold to a former commissioner in Lagos State at a giveaway price.

The governor said: “Although, it isn’t time for political campaign, yet I will not hesitate to respond to Daniel’s allegations which he leveled against me and my administration here in the same Odeda Local Government.

“The farmlands were over 60, when we came in, they were five left. God will punish them all.

“Our forefathers will never forgive them and future generations will also curse them. They thought we are like them, we are not, we are true sons of Ogun State.

“He is envious of our achievements and successes. We need to let them know that we are not thieves.

“They will not be able to stand and campaign here in Odeda by the time I start exposing them.

“If not for the type of the country we are, they ought to bury their heads in shame rather than boasting around town.

“We are bona fide sons of the soil and will never do things that will destroy the future of our children.

“They are not happy because all the property they stole; we have retrieved them.

“The hotels, farms, money and others have been collected back; we will do what is needful.

“They said we didn’t do anything here, when we came in, we planned to begin work on this road, but we were stopped because the Federal Government has begun work on it.

“Here it is now, nothing is being done here. When we start the work, I promise you it will be stopped at Bakatari town.

But the former governor in a statement by his media aide, Ayo Giwa, said:

“The people of Ogun State are saying it loud and clear that they are tired of this government.
“As governor why did he not institute a probe to look into the concessions?
“He has all the machinery of government at hand so what is he waiting for?
“The statement that Otunba Gbenga Daniel is not from Sagamu is an insult to the people of Sagamu.
“It’s also a taboo and effrontery on the traditional institutions in the land, especially the thrones of the Akarigbo of Remoland as well as the Ewusi of Makun in Remo Kingdom.
“That Otunba Daniel sold all the state’s assets is cheap blackmail. Is concession not different from outright sale?”

Face Off Betwen LASU Students And The Government

by Ogundimu Omolabake

Lagos state university for years have been in lots of challenges, one of which is the increment in their tuition fees.

Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, upon his entry as the governor of Lagos state implemented a lot of changes of which the increment of Lagos state university tuition fee was included. The fee was increased from #25,000 to a whooping sum of #197,000 for art students and #350,000 for medical students.

The governor said the decision for hike in the institution tuition fee was reached when in 2010, the students of the institution besieged the Lagos state assembly demanding for certain changes to be made in their school as the condition of the school was in a deplorable condition and part of the recommendation of the visitation panel set up by the governor and his aides was that the tuition of the school should be increased for progress of the school.

Parents, students and stakeholders alike were not pleased with this increase as they said it was a move aimed at denying lower class children an opportunity to acquire education, and a route out of poverty
The student union and academic staff union of universities members called for a reduction as at when the increase was stated and in an effort to calm these bodies the government assured the existing students that the implementation of the increased school fees would only apply to the new intake of the institution. Howbeit that did nothing to reduce their anger over the 100 percent increase and so ensued a fight on behalf the new intakes by the existing students.
Asuu-lasu started the struggle for the reduction of the school fees but lasuites continued the struggle. Akeem Olalekan, the student union president as at then, organized protests, series of riots and protests were held by the students, all this yielded negative response from the governor and students had to drop out of the institution by forfeiting their admission.
Awoyeni Tunde said “it was a day of joy when I got admission to study economics in Lagos state university after so many trial to gain admission, but when I and my family heard about the increasement in the school fees everything fell out place for me till my parents were able to borrow the money from people to enable me get an education by all means”.
One of the members of the student union, who desired anonymity, described the increment as an idea to take away education from children of common men, saying that the increment is meant for the children of the elite further describing the move as an unjust, unfair and irrational move on part of the government.
The institution continued with academic activities but never gave up hope for the reduction of the school fees. The academic session of 2013/2014 brought Nurudeen Yusuf into power as the president of the school’s student union, he brought forth hope and more compelling protest were made outside the governor’s office, this time the protest included cooking of meals indicating that they had no intention of leaving without positive response.
After three years of continuous struggle by the affected students and subjection of governor Fashola to a barrage of remonstration by the public for what they called an irrational increment of fee in a state owned university, the governor announced the reduction of the fees by 34- 60 percent on June 11, 2014.
On the 19th convocation ceremony of the institution, if there was any news that the entire Lasu community wanted to hear from the governor, it was the news of reversal of the fees back to #25,000 implemented immediately.
Though a big relief, parents and students saw this reduction as too good to be true, saying that after three years of struggle and after his recent decision to reduce the fees by 34-60 percent, that this decision of reversal is a political tactics for the 2015 election.
Students who scurried to pay will now be reimbursed at the rate of the June 2014 reduction made by the governor, it took three years to reduce the fee, and students wonder now how long it will take to refund them. Will it be refunded before the election? If then we will know if this action of reversal is a tactics to help the governor and his party in the 2015 election or the governor’s conscience telling him to listen to the agitation of the students after so long.
However, students still have a big smile on their faces, thanking the student union president for never giving up hope and the governor for finally acknowledging their grievances.
