Lasu Student Celebrates Reversal Of Fee.

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos state announced on Thursday at the 19th convocation ceremony, the reversal of the Lagos State University fee from 350,000 to 25,000 which was the old rate, led to the student who were protesting for further reduction in their fee to go into
jubilation.
The Governor said in his speech that the reduction is done with the approval of the state executive council. He said as a result of this reduction the university would run an uninterrupted academic calendar as the era of students spending extra days from their expected four
years was over in the institution.
The student union president, Mr. Nurudeen Yusuf in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria commended Fashola for his kind gesture. He said;

"Today marks a significant day in the history of Lagos, with this

development, we are optimistic that the future of Lagos will be

great".

 

In an interview with a student of LASU, Abdulahi Opeyemi, she said she is so happy about the reduction, that even though they have suffered enough on the issue of the reduction, they will now enjoy.

 

Bola Oladele, a student of LASU also said that Fashola has proved that he is a listening leaders by wiping tears of the LASU students, she said it was unexpected because we were expecting reduction should be 46,000 but the Governor surprised us by making a total reversal to 25,000.

 

This implies that no pain, no gain we have suffered enough for the fee but now Governor Fasola made us happy.

Fashola refunds lasu fee

Lagos State University has announced the refund of excess fee paid by students after the fee was slashed back to twenty five thousand naira. The school announced the refund for students that paid the previous amount of fee from 60% to 30% reduction as the Lagos State governor Babatunde Raji Fashola reduces the fees back to twenty five thousand naira on the 10^th convocation ceremony.

 

The school tution which was increased at the onset  of the 20011/2012 session generated a lot of controversies as the students protested the fee increment and the school went on strike for months, but despite  the efforts of the students union, the government declined to reduce the fees from two hundred and fifty thousand naira. However, before the governor announced the fees reduction, the government initially reduced the fee to a perentage of 60 t0 30%, but despite this reduction the students union declined and refused to accept the 60% t0 30% reduction and demand that the fee should be reduced to forty five thousand naira. This generated a whole lot of protest as the SUG governor Nurudeen Teniola Aka (optimist) urged the students not to pay the 60% to 30% reduction as it was still too much and many students could still not afford to pay it. But nonetheless, some students still went ahead to pay the fees as the school management gave a two week ultimatuim for the payment.

 

However, after the reduction of the fees which was said to commence immediately the 300 level students who were to pay 60% of two hundred and fifity thousand naira would now pay twenty five thousand naira, this new development casued the students that paid 60% to 30% to demand for a refund of the excessive fees they paid. The issue generated a whole lot of mixed reactions form the students.

 

However, in reaction to the students demands, the schools administration announced that the school would refund the excess fee paid by the  students affectd and =N= 840 millions was calculated  to be the total amount of the excess fee paid by the studnets and the refunding of the would commence on September 8. In an interview with a 300 level Mass Communication students Odunayo Foluke she said ”this is a very good development and a good inititative from the government , it would be unfair for  the students affected if the fee is not refunded” also speaking with Samuel Temitope a 300 level Business Administration student, he said “the refund of the excess fee is a very brave move by the school administration, as it makes life easy for the students and the money would be spent on other things like collection of hostels".

LASU FEES REVERSAL

Though it gives hope to potential lasuites but it is an action that ought to have been taken from a governor that tags himself as a progressive, yet refuses the poor access to university education.

Was he not the person that instituted a panel in 2011 to probe the incessant crisis in lasu? Where has he been all these years that he now considers it as expedient. Did he consider how frustrated people that had no second chance like me when he “instigated” a 750 percent hike in tuition as ‘part of measures to ensure quality? Did they even take any feasibility study on the impact of the likely hike on students before hiking fees?

The truth is that the BRF Babatunde Raji Fashola led government is becoming jiltery of the PDP threat to their firm grip on power and finds it expedient to block the apparent loophole in its educational policy to prevent PDP from cashing in on this situation. Though some may argue that the protest by the fearless fighter who has a well founded democratic philosophy, Comrade Nurudeen Yusuf (Optimist) led Lasusu could have triggered the latest reversal but the Akeem Durojaiye led Lasusu also protested the fee hike in 2011 but it fell on deaf ears.

To me it is a belated action that ought to have been taken into consideration three years ago.
