There's no doubt Oleku has brought out the richness and elegance of the Nigerian fashion culture.
At a time, the iro (wrapper) and buba (blouse) was mainly a wear for
matured women especially in the south-west, Nigeria. Reverse is the case
now, has youths and teenagers in a bid to create a smart fashionable
acceptance to their group came out with a design called Oleku.
Oleku is a yoruba word, which in english means something too hot.Unlike
the trends of 1970s ans 1980s where matured women tie their
iro (wrappers) round their waist and below their knees, with a long
sleeve and buba (blouse) to match, Oleku has undergone some alterations
with the iro (above the knees) with shorter sleeves. This fashion trend
has become conspicuous at various occasionYouths and teenagers now
combine different colours of materials mostly Ankara for the Oleku
style, material used for the blouse can different from that of the
wrapper, some go to the extent of using different colours of material.
There's no doubt Oleku has brought out the richness and elegance of the
Nigerian fashion culture.Even adults are not left out has they find it
very comfortable. You may wear high heel shoes or use accessories such
as beads to beautify it.
