by Ugwuodoh Stephen Nnamdi

Attire is well imbedded into people’s culture as a symbolism or representation of their ethnicity, everywhere in the world. In Nigeria, we have various materials that are of cultural relevance used for several generations till date, some of which are Ankara, Asooke, Asoofi,Adiredanshiki, George,Lace among others, styled into Iro and Buba, skirt and blouse, oleku, Kaba.

Native attire is observed as the people favorite for occasions and weekends wear; Due to the fact that people wants to appear western in their dressing on weekdays as it is the acceptable standard for private formal institution in Nigeria or because they feel smart and at ease in casual wears.

According to Omolewa Savage, 300 level student, department of Broadcasting, she said “I wear natives occasionally and on weekends to portray my origin in Yoruba land, because I have been confused most time by people as an easterner.”

According to Omotosho Victoria, a fashion designer, she said, “Sowing African attires keeps me in business, I don’t see African attires going into extinction anytime, because there is new innovation and more patronage of the African materials to sow.”

The Nigeria president Dr.Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, adorn himself always in his native attire, just like his predecessor chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and there is freedom for government officials to put on native attires to the office. This act signify the willingness of the Nigerian Government to promote her culture nationally andinternationally.

It is the rave of the moment, to see young ladies clad in short iro and buba accompanied with bangles, shoes, bags, gele or George iro and French lace has buba looking elegant and gorgeous.
